Lavi — Torah Learning App
Last updated: April 5, 2026
1. Introduction
Lavi (“we,” “our,” or “us”) operates the Lavi mobile application (the “App”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our App. Please read this policy carefully. By using the App, you agree to the practices described here.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information You Provide Directly
- Account information: When you create an account, we collect your email address, password (stored as a secure hash — never in plain text), and display name.
- Profile information: Username and profile picture you choose to upload.
- Chat messages: Messages you send in the Torah AI Chat feature are transmitted to our AI provider (OpenRouter) to generate responses. We do not store chat history on our servers beyond what is needed to provide the in-session experience.
- Feedback: Any feedback or support messages you submit through the in-app feedback feature.
2.2 Information Collected Automatically
- Learning activity: Lessons completed, XP earned, streak data, stars, quiz results, and lesson progress.
- App usage: Which features you use, onboarding steps completed, paywall interactions, and session events.
- Device information: Device type, operating system version, and app version (collected for crash reporting and compatibility).
- Crash and error data: Technical error logs collected when the app crashes or encounters an error.
2.3 Information You May Optionally Provide
- Location: If you enable “Use Device Location” in Zmanim settings, we access your device’s approximate location to calculate local sunset and prayer times (Zmanim). Location is used only for this calculation and is not stored on our servers. You may disable this at any time and enter your location manually instead.
- Photos / Camera: If you set a profile picture, you may choose a photo from your library or take a new one. The image is stored in your account.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Create and manage your account
- Provide, operate, and improve the App and its features
- Calculate and display personalized Zmanim (Jewish prayer times)
- Track your learning progress, streaks, and achievements
- Process in-app subscriptions and manage your entitlements
- Send you scheduled local notifications (learning reminders and Zmanim alerts) — only if you grant permission
- Respond to your feedback and support requests
- Analyze usage patterns to improve the App (using aggregated, anonymized data)
- Monitor and fix crashes and technical errors
- Comply with legal obligations
4. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services. Each has its own privacy policy governing how they handle your data:
| Service | Purpose | Privacy Policy |
|---|---|---|
| Google Firebase (Auth, Firestore, Storage) | Account authentication, cloud data sync, file storage | firebase.google.com/support/privacy |
| RevenueCat | Subscription and in-app purchase management | revenuecat.com/privacy |
| Sentry | Crash reporting and error monitoring | sentry.io/privacy |
| PostHog | Usage analytics (anonymized event tracking) | posthog.com/privacy |
| OpenRouter | AI-powered Torah Chat responses | openrouter.ai/privacy |
| Google Sign-In | Optional sign-in method | policies.google.com/privacy |
| Apple Sign-In | Optional sign-in method | apple.com/legal/privacy |
What we share with these services:
- Firebase receives your account credentials, profile data, and learning progress for storage and sync.
- RevenueCat receives your device identifier and Firebase user ID to manage subscription status.
- Sentry receives anonymized crash reports and technical error logs. We do not send your email address or personal identifiers to Sentry.
- PostHog receives anonymized usage events (e.g., “lesson completed,” “paywall viewed”). We do not send your name or email to PostHog.
- OpenRouter receives the content of your Torah Chat messages to generate AI responses. Do not include sensitive personal information in chat messages.
We do not sell your personal information to any third party.
5. Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored using Google Firebase, which provides industry-standard security including encryption in transit (TLS) and access controls. We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information.
However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
6. Data Retention
Active accounts: We retain your data for as long as your account is active.
Deleted accounts: When you delete your account through the App, your Firebase account and associated data are deleted. Some anonymized analytics data may be retained in aggregated form.
Guest mode: Data stored locally on your device (learning progress, settings) is deleted when you uninstall the App. Guest users who never create an account have no server-side data.
7. Your Rights and Choices
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights:
- Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correction: Request correction of inaccurate data.
- Deletion: Delete your account directly within the App (Settings → Delete Account), which removes your Firebase account and associated data. Alternatively, contact us at the email below.
- Notification opt-out: You may disable learning reminders and Zmanim notifications at any time through the App’s Settings or your device’s notification settings.
- Location opt-out: You may switch from device location to manual location entry at any time in Zmanim settings.
- Data portability: Contact us to request an export of your data.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at: privacy@thelaviapp.com
California residents (CCPA): You have the right to know what personal information is collected, to request deletion, and to opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information.
EEA/UK residents (GDPR): Our legal basis for processing your data is: (a) performance of a contract (providing the App), (b) legitimate interests (analytics, crash monitoring), and (c) your consent (location, notifications). You may withdraw consent at any time.
8. Children’s Privacy
The App is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
The App requests your age during onboarding. Users who indicate they are under 13 should not create an account.
9. Notifications
The App may send you local notifications including:
- Learning reminders: Daily reminders to complete a lesson and maintain your streak.
- Zmanim alerts: Notifications about sunset and candle-lighting times based on your location settings.
All notifications are scheduled locally on your device. We do not use a remote push notification server. You can enable or disable each notification type within the App’s Settings, or globally through your device’s notification settings.
10. In-App Purchases and Subscriptions
Subscription payments are processed by Apple (App Store) or Google (Play Store). We do not collect or store your payment card information. RevenueCat manages subscription status on our behalf. See Section 4 for RevenueCat’s privacy policy.
11. Links to Other Sites
The App may contain links to external websites (e.g., our Terms of Service, Privacy Policy hosted on our website). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by updating the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, through an in-app notice. Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
